Trusted Execution Environments Featuring Intel and iExec

Learn about Trusted Execution Environments using Intel SGX from Jim Zhang, Jean-Charles Cabelguen, and Eugene Yarmosh.

On Jan 26th, Kaleido’s Head of Protocol Jim Zhang joined special guests Jean-Charles Cabelguen from iExec, a blockchain-based decentralized cloud computing platform, and Eugene Yarmosh, Chief Architect & Product Owner at Intel, to discuss and demo Trusted Execution Environments using Intel SGX.

We also give an overview of Hyperledger project Avalon and the EEA (Enterprise Ethereum Alliance) Off-chain Trusted Compute Specification (TCF), and discuss the value of privacy preserving off-chain compute options for enterprise blockchain use-cases.

Details

Trusted Execution Environments utilize CPU and memory isolation to create highly secure execution environments for processing the most sensitive data. Used together with blockchains, TEEs can improve scalability and enable novel collaborative data processing scenarios.

Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX) based TCF flows provide a unique value by offloading parts of the smart contract transaction cycle that are compute-intensive, so as to save on compute cost and increase efficiency, or that involve sensitive data such as encryption keys, and as such are not suitable for smart contracts.

iExec is creating a blockchain-based decentralized cloud computing platform. The goal is to power breakthrough projects in AI, green IT, fog computing, and IoT... using available computing resources from all over the world. iExec is building new paradigms sustaining the decentralized economy. Jean-charles coordinates the work of the Trusted Compute Task Force. The goal is to provide technical specifications for companies wanting to leverage Trusted Execution Environment, like Intel SGX.

Biographies

Jean-Charles Cabelguen PhD has a PhD in Science and 14 years of experience in research, marketing and in international business development. For him blockchain is more than a technology, it is a strategy. He is Chief of Innovation & Adoption at iExec and focuses on making iExec a major component for breakthrough projects in Blockchain, AI, Big Data, Edge computing and IoT.

Eugene Yarmosh is Chief Architect and Product Owner of Off-chain Trusted Compute For Blockchains at Intel, where he has utilized Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) Intel SGX to build off-chain solutions for blockchains and DLT (Decentralized Ledger Technology).  Eugene is the editor of the EEA (Enterprise Ethereum Alliance) Off-chain Trusted Compute Specification, and the architect and product owner of Hyperledger project Avalon, aka Trusted Compute Framework (TCF).  Intel’s Software Guard Extensions (SGX) was used for the initial implementation of Avalon.

Jim Zhang is a co-founder of Kaleido and the Head of Protocol Engineering. Jim has been an active member of the Ethereum Enterprise Alliance Technical Spec Workgroup and has contributed to Quorum, Hyperledger Besu and Hyperledger Avalon open source projects. Jim was a maintainer of the Hyperledger Fabric project. He has held a Senior Technical Staff Member role as IBM’s blockchain platform lead architect.
